About This Tool
This tool was designed and written by Tyler Brodhead, LPC as a bilateral stimulation training tool to support EMDR therapy sessions, providing visual, auditory, and tactile bilateral cues for clinicians and clients to use during adaptive information processing work. Designed for use under the direction of a trained EMDR clinician.
This tool and its contents are the exclusive intellectual property of Tyler Brodhead, LPC and LifeLab™. Use is authorized solely by LifeLab™ or the author. Any reproduction, distribution, adaptation, or use by any other individual or organization is strictly prohibited.
Orient yourself to the EMDR protocol, understand the theoretical model, review contraindications, and determine whether to proceed with resource-only work or full reprocessing based on your training level.
What is EMDR?
Evidence-based, first-line PTSD treatment (WHO, APA, VA/DoD, NICE). 30+ RCTs. The patient recalls a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (BLS). This dual-attention task taxes working memory, reducing the memory's vividness and emotional charge (Jongh et al., 2024).
AIP Model
Shapiro's Adaptive Information Processing model: trauma disrupts natural processing, freezing memories with original sensory/emotional content. EMDR facilitates reprocessing and integration into adaptive networks. fMRI confirms reduced amygdala activation and normalized hippocampal function post-treatment.
Contraindications — Do Not Proceed If:
- Active suicidality or acute crisis
- Active psychosis or severe dissociation
- Under influence of substances
- Uncontrolled seizure disorder
- Cannot maintain dual attention
- No therapeutic relationship established
- Cannot self-regulate with Safe Place
